Madaripur Municipality stands on the bank of the ArialKha River and the branch river Kumar. Distance from Dhaka is 260 km, Madaripur Municipality was established in 1875. This is a class “A” Pourashava. The Pourashava consists of 9 wards and 33 mahalias The area of the Pourashava is 14.05 sq km.
The name Madaripur was introduced with the name Hazrat Badruddin Shah Madar (Ra) who came here for the proclamation of Islam. Madaripur Pourashava is bounded with Rasti and Panchkhola union at the northern side, Khoajpur union at the eastern side, Jhaudi and Ghatmajhi union at the southern portion and Pearpur union at the western side.
Madaripur Pourashava is the District town of Madaripur District. Madaripur town is the core point of the district. This Pourashava stands in the middle of Khulna and Barishal so it has a geographical importance. The town do have a strong road network and communication system with the capital city of Dhaka, industrial city of Khulna and other regional centres of Jessore, Barishal, Magura Kushtia and Jhenaidah The communication system and road network system need to be more developed, re-planned, new layout plans of roads, construction of bypass and new roads so as to create more importance like the other district headquarters. As this area was developed on the Arialkha-Kumar River and the river has played an important role for its development and transportation. River transport is still another important transportation way especially for goods and commodities, influence of economic flow ultimately focused around this zone.
